What Is Commercial Electronics Recycling?

Commercial electronics recycling is the processing of end-of-life electronic equipment from business operations into separated material streams: metals, plastics, glass, and recoverable components. It is distinct from municipal or consumer e-waste collection in three ways that matter operationally.

Volume arrives in bulk rather than by the piece, which changes the logistics from drop-off to scheduled pickup or roll-off placement. The material is mixed and often includes regulated components that a consumer stream would not see in quantity, such as UPS battery strings, lamp assemblies, and industrial control equipment. And the organization generating it carries documentation obligations that a household does not: an auditor, an insurer, or a customer's vendor-risk questionnaire will eventually ask where the material went.

That last point is where most programs fail. "We recycled it" is not a defensible statement without records identifying the processor and the material stream. Under RCRA and state law, generator responsibility does not end when the truck leaves, which means an organization that cannot evidence downstream routing has retained the exposure while paying someone to remove the equipment.

Data-bearing devices are handled first. Anything holding information, including the drives inside copiers and the configurations inside network equipment, routes through secure data destruction before it enters the recycling stream, because a shredded device is not the same thing as a sanitized one and the records have to show which happened.

What We Accept

The table below covers standard commercial categories. Unusual equipment, anything containing refrigerants, and anything with a damaged battery should be flagged during scheduling so handling is arranged in advance rather than discovered on the dock.

Materials Recovered & End Markets

Electronics are a mixed material stream, and recovery depends on separation. The table below describes where each fraction typically goes; specific yields vary considerably by equipment type, age, and condition, so no fixed recovery percentage should be assumed for a given load.

Boards are where most of the recoverable value in electronics sits, which is why they are graded rather than treated as a single commodity. A populated server board and a bare backplane are not the same material and should not be settled as though they were.

Regulated Materials & Handling

Several components in a normal commercial e-waste load are regulated, and the obligations attach to the generator.

Batteries. Lead-acid, lithium-ion, and nickel-based batteries are managed under federal hazardous waste rules or the universal waste rule at 40 CFR Part 273 depending on chemistry and jurisdiction. Lithium-ion is the operational concern rather than the paperwork one. Cells that are damaged, swollen, or crushed can enter thermal runaway, and a battery fire inside a container, a truck, or a processing facility is a serious event that has become considerably more common as lithium-ion volumes have grown. Batteries are removed from equipment where practical, segregated by chemistry, terminals protected, and never bulk-commingled. Damaged cells require advance notice because they change the packaging and transport requirements.

Transport of lithium cells. Shipping is regulated under DOT 49 CFR, with cells shipped under UN3480 when travelling alone and UN3481 when contained in or packed with equipment. Damaged or defective cells carry additional restrictions and cannot simply be added to a general load.

Mercury-containing components. Backlights in older LCD panels, fluorescent lamps in equipment and fixtures, and certain switches and relays contain mercury and fall under universal waste handling.

CRT glass. Legacy CRT monitors and televisions contain leaded glass regulated under RCRA, with specific handling and outlet requirements. CRTs still surface in commercial retirements from storage rooms and older facilities.

Circuit boards and characteristic waste. Certain board and component fractions can exhibit RCRA toxicity characteristics in the D004 to D011 range depending on composition. Boards are routed to processors equipped for them rather than shredded into a general stream.

Refrigerants. Where cooling equipment is included, refrigerant recovery is governed by Clean Air Act Section 608 and must be performed by certified technicians before the unit is processed.

State landfill restrictions. Many states restrict or ban disposal of covered electronics in solid waste landfills, and the definitions of what is covered differ between them. An organization operating across state lines cannot rely on one uniform answer.

Our Process

  1. Scheduling and container placement. Volume, material mix, and site access determine the collection model: scheduled pickup, roll-off or gaylord placement for ongoing generation, or project-based removal following a decommissioning. Regulated materials are identified before collection so packaging is right the first time.

  2. Collection and load documentation. Material is collected and the load documented at pickup. Data-bearing devices are separated and manifested apart from the general stream rather than travelling mixed.

  3. Receipt, weighing, and reconciliation. Inbound material is weighed and reconciled against the pickup documentation, producing the weight ticket that supports both settlement and diversion reporting.

  4. Data-bearing segregation. Any device holding information is routed to sanitization or destruction before it can enter mechanical processing, and the outcome is recorded against the device.

  5. Regulated-material removal. Batteries, mercury-containing components, CRT glass, and other regulated fractions are removed and segregated into their own controlled streams ahead of general processing.

  6. Sorting, dismantling, and separation. Equipment is dismantled or mechanically processed and separated into material fractions: ferrous, non-ferrous, boards, plastics, and glass. Boards are graded rather than pooled.

  7. Downstream routing and reporting. Separated fractions are routed to vetted downstream processors appropriate to each material, and the client receives weight tickets, downstream documentation, and diversion records.

Logistics, Weights & Settlement

Collection models. Scheduled pickups suit organizations generating continuously. Container placement, whether roll-off, gaylord, or pallet, suits facilities accumulating volume between collections. Project-based removal suits refreshes, closures, and decommissioning, and is usually scoped alongside IT decommissioning.

Weights. Material processed by weight is weighed at receipt on certified scales, and the ticket records gross, tare, and net. Weight tickets are the underlying evidence for both settlement and any diversion figure reported later, so they are issued as documentation rather than as an internal record.

How the commercial model works. Mixed e-waste is generally a cost-to-process stream rather than a revenue one, because separation and regulated handling cost more than the recovered material returns. Loads richer in metal, board, or clean copper can offset or reverse that. Which side of the line a given program lands on depends on material mix, volume, freight distance, and how much regulated material is involved. The commercial model is set during scoping against the actual material rather than quoted as a headline rate.

Freight. Distance and load density affect the economics more than most organizations expect. Consolidating volume into fewer, fuller collections generally costs less per unit than frequent partial pickups, which is worth planning around for multi-site programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you charge for electronics recycling, or do we get paid?
It depends on the material. Mixed e-waste typically costs more to process safely than the recovered material returns, because separation, regulated handling, and freight are the dominant costs. Loads with a high proportion of metal, populated boards, or clean copper can offset that and occasionally reverse it. The model is set during scoping against your actual material mix rather than quoted as a flat rate.

Do we need to remove hard drives before pickup?
Not necessarily, and there are arguments both ways. Removing drives in advance gives you direct control over the highest-risk items, while leaving them installed keeps devices intact for resale evaluation and avoids drives being pulled and misplaced. Either way, data-bearing devices are identified and segregated at collection and handled under the secure data destruction process, with the outcome recorded per device.

How are batteries handled?
They are removed from equipment where practical, segregated by chemistry, with terminals protected, and routed to chemistry-specific processors. Damaged, swollen, or crushed lithium-ion cells need to be flagged before collection, because they carry additional packaging and transport requirements and present a genuine thermal risk in a mixed container.

Can you take old CRT monitors and televisions?
Yes. CRTs contain leaded glass regulated under RCRA and are handled as a separate stream with permitted outlets. They still appear regularly in commercial retirements, usually out of storage rooms, and they should be identified during scheduling since they affect handling.

What documentation do we receive?
Weight tickets, collection documentation, downstream processor records, regulated-material handling records, a diversion summary, and per-device data destruction records where data-bearing equipment was included. The package is built to answer a vendor-risk questionnaire or an audit request without further assembly.

Is there a minimum volume for pickup?
No. Multi-site programs with small per-location volumes are routine, and a single accumulated storage room is a normal starting point. Volume affects the collection model and the freight economics, not whether the service applies.

What happens to the material after it leaves our site?
It is weighed, reconciled, and separated into material fractions, then routed to downstream processors matched to each stream: metals to smelters and mills, boards to specialized refining, plastics to resin processors, and regulated fractions to permitted outlets. Downstream records covering those outlets form part of your documentation package.
