What Is Solar Panel Dismantling?

Solar panel dismantling refers to the physical deconstruction of PV modules after removal from a solar array. Dismantling is distinct from removal — removal means taking panels off racks and out of the field; dismantling means breaking panels down to their constituent material streams for separate recovery.

A standard crystalline silicon module consists of: a tempered glass front layer, an EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) polymer encapsulant, silicon wafer cells with silver contacts and aluminum busbars, a back-sheet polymer layer, an aluminum frame, and a junction box with copper wiring. Dismantling separates these streams because they have different downstream recycling pathways, different regulatory profiles, and different commodity values.

For EPCs and decommissioning contractors, the distinction between module-level recycling (whole panels sent to a processor) and full dismantling depends on processor capability, panel condition, and whether the project requires TCLP testing before materials are committed to a downstream stream. 1. Project Assessment and Intake

2. Transportation and Receiving

Panels arrive at the processing facility via reverse logistics coordinated by Blue Revive's freight network. On arrival, panels are weighed, photographed, and logged by project lot. Weight tickets are generated at intake and form the first link in the chain-of-custody documentation.

3. TCLP Screening (Where Required)

For thin-film panels (CdTe, CIGS), damaged or broken modules, or panels of uncertain chemistry, a TCLP screen is conducted before dismantling proceeds. This determines whether the material is classified as Characteristic Hazardous Waste under RCRA Subtitle C, which affects handling protocols and downstream routing.

4. Frame and Junction Box Removal

Aluminum frames are removed mechanically. Junction boxes and wiring harnesses are separated from the module body. These components are staged separately for recovery — aluminum frames enter secondary aluminum markets; copper wiring is directed to metals processors.

5. Glass and Cell Layer Separation

Glass laminate separation from the cell-and-encapsulant layer is conducted using thermal or mechanical processing. Tempered glass is directed to cullet processors. The cell layer, containing silicon, silver, and polymer materials, is processed through specialty PV cell recovery operations.

6. Material Staging and Verification

Recovered material streams are weighed by category — glass, aluminum, copper, cell material — and staged for downstream transport. Material weights are documented and cross-referenced against incoming weight records to produce a material balance report.

7. Downstream Transfer and Documentation

Each material stream is transferred to the appropriate downstream processor in Blue Revive's audited R2v3 vendor chain. Transfer documentation includes weight tickets, material classification records, and downstream receipt confirmations.

8. Certificate of Recycling Issuance

Upon completion of downstream processing confirmation, Blue Revive issues a certificate of recycling documenting total weight processed, material disposition by stream, processing facility, and project identification. This document is the primary compliance and ESG reporting deliverable.
